A BURG Appeal, September 29, 2008

Dear members, friends, and supporters of Blacksburg United for Responsible Growth:

Thank you again for the incredible support of our effort to stop the Walmart next to Margaret Beeks Elementary School. We are very happy to report that our shared efforts are paying off.

You may have heard that our case is going to the Virginia Supreme Court! The court's decision to take our appeal is a major victory for us, and shows that a citizens' group like ours can stand up to a wealthy developer who is working with the largest corporation in the world.

While this represents a turning point in our efforts, it is expensive to mount a case in the Supreme Court. Our attorney has agreed to a fee cap of $30,000 for the entire case. But about $15,000 of this is due now, and we need to be sure that the attorneys can devote the time and resources to the case that we need now.

This case is crucial for preserving Blacksburg's quality of life as the town grows. And now it will result in a decision that will impact the entire state of Virginia. We have relied on the tremendous support of our community to get us to this point.   Now we need a final push to get us to Richmond, and to get the outcome that Blacksburg and Virginia need.

Because of our fee cap arrangement, we know that our bill will not continue to rise as the case proceeds. We have a fixed amount, but no more, that we need to pay down to zero.
