Decision time: BURG Community Meeting, Sunday, Feb. 10
The Town Council has decided to appeal the recent decision of Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge, Bobby Turk. Thank you for large number of emails Council members received in support of this decision!
Now BURG, and the 21 aggrieved residents of Blacksburg who appealed the earlier Board of Zoning Appeals ruling, must decide if we want to go to the Virginia Supreme Court too.
But this is a decision that the BURG steering committee can not make alone. We need to consider how much our participation would help in light of the additional costs of the long appeal process. And it all depends on how determined our members and the broader community are to support taking the case to the Virginia Supreme Court.
To get as much community input in this decision as possible, we are holding a Community Meeting, this Sunday, Feb. 10, 7:30 PM, at Gillie's Restaurant, 153 College Ave.
You will get answers to these questions and more:
- What is the significance of Judge Turk's decision?
- What is BURG's financial situation?
- How does an appeal to the Virginia Supreme Court work?
- How long will it take?
- How much will it cost?
- How might our participation help to get the outcome we want?
If enough members of our community are convinced that the appeal is worthwhile, and are willing to help shoulder the expenses and raise the additional funds we will need, only then can we go ahead. This is a huge decision, and we need to have as many interested people as possible involved in it.

Our 100 from 100 campaign is approaching our initial goal! As of this morning, 95 households of our concerned neighbors, friends, relatives, in Blacksburg, and beyond, have given at least $100 each to the BURG legal fund. We're so close!
Thus far, most of the contributions have come from the neighborhoods that will be most affected by a supercenter on South Main. But, of course, this travesty of planning will impact all of us, our quality of life, and environment.
